A routine traffic stop in Orange County, Florida, turned into a child-neglect and drug investigation after a sheriff’s deputy said he saw a woman smoking what he believed was marijuana in a vehicle while two young children sat in the back seat, only to later learn that the driver was himself a police officer.
BodyCam Network USA, which published the footage, said the April 11, 2025 encounter involved an officer with the Opa-locka Police Department and his wife, although the Orange County Sheriff’s Office redacted the man’s face, name and occupation from the released video.
According to the channel, the officer’s identity was only determined because his name remained visible in a public arrest report.
Deputy Says He Saw Smoke At A Red Light
The Orange County deputy said he was stopped at a traffic light when he looked toward the vehicle beside him and saw the woman in the passenger seat light what appeared to be a dark-colored cigarette before exhaling smoke through the window.
BodyCam Network USA said the woman then noticed the deputy looking at her, quickly put the cigarette out and rolled up the window.
The deputy also noticed that the occupants were not wearing seat belts and that the vehicle had heavily tinted windows, giving him additional reasons to initiate a traffic stop.
Once the car pulled over, the deputy asked the driver and passenger for identification and quickly questioned the smell coming from the vehicle.
“What do I smell when we come out of this car?” he asked.
The occupants initially denied that there was marijuana inside, while the woman said she smoked cannabis at night and had last used it the previous evening.
The deputy was not convinced.
He told them he had spent years working drug and gun enforcement and said the smell was familiar enough that he believed marijuana was present inside the vehicle.
Driver Tells Deputy He Is A Police Officer
During the stop, the deputy learned that the driver worked for the Opa-locka Police Department.
That revelation did not appear to make the deputy more lenient, particularly after he said both adults had been dishonest about whether marijuana was inside the car.
When the deputy asked again whether he would find a joint, the woman eventually acknowledged that one was there and pointed officers toward it.
The deputy then had both adults step out while another officer checked on the children sitting in the back seat.
According to the footage, the deputy believed both children were very young, possibly under five.
He questioned the decision to smoke marijuana inside a vehicle with children present and told the adults that the circumstances could support a child-neglect investigation.
The presence of a law-enforcement officer behind the wheel made the situation especially uncomfortable because the deputy repeatedly suggested that the driver should have understood the seriousness of the circumstances.
The Deputy Says The Woman Was Smoking In The Car
The woman denied smoking marijuana in the vehicle at the time of the stop, but the deputy said he had personally watched her inhale and exhale smoke while they were sitting next to each other at the traffic light.
He told her that after she noticed him looking, she put the cigarette away and rolled up the window.
The deputy said that direct observation, combined with the smell and the marijuana later found in the vehicle, was why he did not believe the explanation that she had only smoked the night before.
He also became frustrated by what he described as repeated lying.
“I cut a lot of breaks,” the deputy told her, but said his willingness to use discretion disappeared when he believed someone was being dishonest about something he had just witnessed himself.
That became a major turning point in the stop.
Rather than issuing only traffic citations and moving on, the deputy decided to arrest the woman on drug and child-neglect allegations.
The Officer Husband Apologizes
Later in the footage, the driver approached the deputy and apologized for how he had handled the initial conversation.
He said he knew his wife was not supposed to smoke and claimed that he normally allowed only tobacco products around him because of his job.
The driver also acknowledged that the deputy was correct about what had happened.
According to the bodycam audio, he said he had seen his wife smoking and understood why the deputy reacted the way he did.
The deputy responded that he had seen the same thing at the traffic light and smelled the smoke as well.
The driver was not arrested.
Instead, he received citations related to the seat belt violation and the vehicle’s window tint, which the deputy said measured darker than legally permitted.
The deputy told him that some of the tint-related citations could potentially be dismissed if the issue was corrected.
Wife Arrested On Three Charges
The deputy informed the woman that she was being taken to jail for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and child neglect.
He also told the family that the Department of Children and Families would have to be contacted because the children had been inside the vehicle during the alleged drug use.
When the woman asked what would happen to her children, the deputy told her they were fine and that the driver was being released.
BodyCam Network USA said she was transported to the Orange County Jail and booked on all three charges.
The footage is notable because the case did not begin with a major investigation or search warrant; it started with a deputy looking through his window at a red light and noticing something he found suspicious.
It also shows how quickly a basic traffic stop can become more serious when an officer believes children are being exposed to illegal drug use inside a confined space.
Prosecutors Later Dropped The Case
Despite the arrest, the case did not ultimately move forward.
BodyCam Network USA said all charges against the woman were later dropped after the state attorney determined that the matter was not suitable for prosecution.
That outcome is important because an arrest and criminal charges are not the same as a conviction, and the footage alone does not establish that every allegation made by the deputy could have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
The police officer who had been driving was not charged in connection with the incident, according to the material presented by the channel.
The encounter nevertheless created an unusual situation in which one law-enforcement officer found himself on the receiving end of another deputy’s drug investigation while his wife was arrested and their children remained in the vehicle.
