A high school prom ended with a student in handcuffs after deputies said he became aggressive while being removed from the event, leading to a physical struggle with officers and an arrest on multiple charges.
Bodycam footage published by the YouTube channel NYDETECTIVE shows the May 3, 2025 incident unfolding after deputies responded to reports that the student had been acting aggressively toward the school principal. According to the channel’s narration and people speaking at the scene, the confrontation began after issues surrounding the student’s girlfriend attending the prom and escalated once deputies tried to escort him outside.
The footage captures both the initial struggle and a much calmer conversation afterward, when the student repeatedly worried that the arrest would prevent him from graduating and derail plans he said he had already made for trade school and work.
Dispute At Prom Escalates Quickly
According to a school staff member speaking with deputies, the student’s girlfriend had not been allowed to attend the prom, but she came to the event anyway.
The staff member said both of them were eventually asked to leave, and the student initially appeared to be walking out before the situation with the principal became more heated.
Deputies then took over the escort.
Bodycam footage begins amid that confrontation, with an officer warning the student that he was going to end up in handcuffs if he did not leave and repeatedly directing him toward the exit.
The student insisted that he was trying to comply, but within seconds officers were ordering him to put his hands behind his back and calling for another unit because they believed he was resisting.
He repeatedly asked how he was resisting and said his hands were already behind him.
The exchange became physical enough that officers eventually brought him under control and moved him away from the main prom area.
Student Insists He Did Not Attack Anyone
Once restrained, the student strongly disputed the officers’ description of what had happened.
He said he had not hit the deputy and argued that the officer had become aggressive with him first.
One deputy responded that the student had stepped toward him in an aggressive manner after already being told he was trespassing and needed to leave.
The student repeatedly asked officers to speak with someone else rather than the deputy involved in the confrontation, saying he believed that officer was determined to send him to jail.
At that point, his anger began giving way to fear.
He told officers that he was trying to graduate and became increasingly upset about the possibility of being booked, asking to call his mother and later requesting a lawyer.
The change in tone is one of the more striking parts of the footage because the student goes from arguing over the arrest to realizing that the consequences may extend far beyond missing the rest of prom.
School Staff Explains What Led To The Arrest
A school employee later gave deputies more background on the events leading up to the struggle.
She said the student’s girlfriend had not been permitted to attend, but she appeared anyway, creating a problem when both of them arrived.
According to her, the student was already being escorted out and had initially cooperated, but once deputies became involved he grew more agitated.
The student interrupted to insist that he had not touched the deputy first and that the officer had attacked him.
The staff member responded that, regardless of what he believed had happened, he needed to understand that physically confronting uniformed law enforcement officers would carry serious consequences.
Another officer then tried to bring the conversation back to the student’s own actions, asking whether he could acknowledge that he had done something wrong.
The student remained defensive, but his demeanor gradually softened.
Officers Try To Calm Him Down
One deputy took a noticeably different approach after the initial struggle, speaking to the student in a calmer tone and telling him that the arrest was serious but not the end of his life.
The student said he wanted to graduate, planned to attend trade school in July and already had a job lined up.
The officer told him those goals had not automatically disappeared because of what happened that night.
He also promised to treat the student respectfully if the student did the same in return, and the two eventually settled into a much less confrontational exchange.
The student began addressing the deputy as “sir,” said he understood there would be consequences and agreed to cooperate while being taken to the patrol vehicle.
That de-escalation mattered because the situation had started with shouting, physical resistance allegations and multiple officers trying to gain control. By the time the student was being walked outside, the interaction had become largely conversational.
Graduation Becomes His Biggest Concern
Once seated near the patrol vehicle, the student repeatedly returned to one fear: that going to jail would prevent him from graduating.
He said he had never previously caused trouble at school and seemed especially distressed by the possibility that one incident at prom could erase the work he had already completed.
The deputy told him that the criminal case and his graduation were separate matters and reassured him that if he had completed his school requirements, he should still receive his diploma.
The officer also encouraged him to remain cooperative and respectful when he reached the jail and later appeared in court.
When the student asked about getting a lawyer, the deputy explained that he could not give legal advice but said he could raise that issue once he entered the court process.
The officer repeatedly told him that his conduct after the initial incident would also be reflected in the report, including the fact that he had calmed down and cooperated.
That was a reasonable effort to keep the situation from escalating again, especially given how emotional the student had become.
Girlfriend Says Goodbye Before He Is Taken Away
Officers eventually allowed the student to speak briefly with his girlfriend before transporting him.
The conversation was emotional, with the student continuing to explain that he had only wanted to attend prom and saying the confrontation had become heated after he tried to speak with someone inside.
His girlfriend encouraged him to remain calm and told him he would be all right.
Before she left, officers allowed them to say goodbye while making clear that the arrest would still proceed.
The student continued expressing regret and concern about how the incident could affect his future, but by then he was largely following instructions and cooperating with deputies.
According to NYDETECTIVE, he was ultimately charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and trespassing.
Those charges are accusations rather than findings of guilt, and the footage does not show the later court outcome.
