A boating trip in Key West turned into a police pursuit along the waterfront after witnesses reported seeing a man strike a woman with a fishing pole, only for the boat operator to ignore repeated commands to dock while insisting that he was simply trying to get fuel.

According to narration from the WildlifeWarden YouTube channel, Key West police responded on May 16, 2026, after receiving multiple reports of a domestic disturbance involving a man and woman aboard a small boat.

Bodycam footage showed officers locating the vessel and trying to bring it alongside the marina, but the operator repeatedly told them he was running low on gas and needed to reach a fuel dock instead.

What followed was an increasingly tense exchange in which officers pursued the slow-moving boat on foot, the vessel eventually ended up against rocks near the Coast Guard station, and both occupants were taken into custody.

Officers Order The Boat To Stop

The first officer to make contact told the operator clearly that she needed him to dock the boat.

The man immediately objected, explaining that he intended to continue toward another location for fuel.

Officer Harris later approached from farther along the waterfront and again told the operator to stop, warning him that continuing to move after repeated commands could become a serious criminal issue.

“I told you guys to dock back there,” Harris said in the bodycam footage.

The man responded that the boat was running out of gas and said he needed to reach a fuel dock.

Police pointed out that he had already passed one place where he could have stopped.

The disagreement became strangely prolonged because the boat did not appear to be moving particularly fast. The man repeatedly offered his identification and argued that he was not trying to flee, while officers remained focused on the fact that he had already been told several times to stop.

That difference in perspective shaped much of the encounter: the operator seemed to believe that providing identification and explaining his destination proved he was cooperating, while officers viewed his continued movement as the opposite.

Boat Ends Up Near The Rocks

Eventually, the vessel reached an area near the Coast Guard station and came alongside rocks rather than a normal dock.

The operator again argued that the spot was unsafe and that he had only continued because he needed fuel.

Officers began helping both occupants off the boat.

The woman appeared to have difficulty climbing the rocks, and the man repeatedly warned officers that she was having trouble balancing.

Bodycam footage became chaotic as the woman pulled against an officer helping her upward.

“Relax,” officers repeatedly told her as they worked to get her off the rocks.

The man became increasingly upset and accused police of hurting her, while officers said she had been pulling away and creating a dangerous situation.

One officer reminded the pair that the entire confrontation could have been avoided if they had simply stopped when first directed.

The physical setting made an already tense situation more difficult. Getting an apparently intoxicated person from a small boat onto uneven rocks while everyone was arguing created exactly the kind of safety problem officers said they had been trying to prevent.

Police Explain Why They Were Looking For Them

Once both people were away from the boat, officers explained that the stop was not about boating paperwork or fuel.

Police said they had received multiple calls concerning an alleged fight between the two.

The man immediately denied that anything violent had happened.

He suggested officers had confused them with another boat and repeatedly said they had been fishing rather than fighting.

Police told him the reporting party had specifically described what investigators were looking for.

The operator continued insisting that officers had the wrong people and emphasized that he had handed over his identification immediately.

He also said he worked as a manager and bartender locally and had never caused problems for police.

An officer responded that his occupation had nothing to do with whether investigators needed to check the report.

That exchange is a useful reminder of how these calls are handled. Once police receive a specific eyewitness report of possible domestic violence, explanations about employment, reputation or willingness to show ID do not remove the need to investigate what allegedly happened.

Man Blames The Screaming On A Barracuda

The man eventually offered a very different explanation for what witnesses may have heard or seen.

He said the couple had caught a large barracuda while fishing and that the fish ended up inside the boat while he was trying to deal with it.

According to him, his wife became frightened and started yelling.

“We had a giant barracuda land in the boat,” he told an officer.

He said she cursed at him because of the fish and wanted to go home while he still wanted to continue fishing.

The man insisted that any shouting was related to that incident rather than an assault.

He repeatedly described the woman as his wife of about 10 years and said they had children together, telling police that there had been no physical violence between them.

“There’s no fighting. There’s no violence,” he said.

But an officer told him that the barracuda explanation did not line up with the reported timing.

When police asked when the fish incident had happened, the man indicated it had been recent.

“That’s not what I’m out here for,” the officer responded, explaining that the reported incident had happened much earlier.

The officer also said she had been speaking directly with the reporting party who claimed to have witnessed the earlier event.

At that point, the fish story did not resolve the central issue, because police said they were investigating a separate allegation from earlier in the day.

Witnesses Allegedly Reported A Fishing-Pole Strike

WildlifeWarden’s narration said witnesses reported seeing the man strike the woman with a fishing pole while they were on the water.

The man continued to deny hitting her and argued that officers had misunderstood the situation.

He also maintained that he never intended to evade police, repeatedly returning to the fuel issue and saying he believed an officer had allowed him to continue toward the dock.

The officer disputed that claim.

Bodycam footage showed him trying several different arguments at once: that he had cooperated by giving identification, that the boat was nearly out of fuel, that the woman was intoxicated, that the screaming came from the barracuda, and that the pair had a long relationship and children together.

Police, however, kept returning to two basic issues — the eyewitness report and his refusal to stop when ordered.

The encounter shows why explanations offered after the fact do not necessarily end an investigation. Officers still have to compare those explanations with witness accounts and everything they observed themselves.

As officers moved to take the woman into custody, she resisted walking with them and continued arguing.

Police told her she was being arrested for resisting without violence.

The man then learned that he was being arrested for domestic battery and resisting an officer without violence.

He reacted angrily, asking who he had supposedly battered and accusing officers of mistreating his wife while helping her off the rocks.

He threatened complaints and legal action, while officers largely declined to continue debating the case with him.

WildlifeWarden reported at the end of the video that both occupants were taken into custody.

The man was charged with domestic battery and resisting an officer without violence, while the woman was charged with resisting an officer without violence.

Both cases remain pending, meaning the allegations have not yet been resolved in court.

The bodycam footage leaves a striking picture of how quickly an ordinary fishing trip can turn into a criminal investigation once witnesses make a serious report and police become involved. Whatever ultimately happens with the charges, the decision to keep moving after officers ordered the vessel to dock transformed the situation from a domestic-battery investigation into a much broader and more chaotic confrontation.
