A traveler who briefly fell asleep after arriving on an international flight woke up at an airport terminal to find his hard-shell suitcase missing, along with clothing, shoes, and nearly everything he needed for the next two weeks.
What initially looked like a difficult airport theft case quickly changed after the traveler told officers that an Apple AirTag was hidden inside the luggage. Surveillance cameras showed a man taking the suitcase, while the tracker helped officers narrow down where the stolen bag had gone.
The incident happened on April 5, 2023, and was featured by the bodycam channel Police Release. According to the channel’s host, airport officers responded after the traveler reported that his luggage had disappeared while he had dozed off near Terminal B.
Within a short time, officers identified a possible suspect, located him near the airport’s TexRail area, and recovered the suitcase after a foot chase. The man was later charged with theft and evading arrest or detention, according to Police Release.
Traveler Wakes Up to Find Luggage Gone
The traveler told officers he had just arrived from an international flight and had been standing near his luggage with a backpack when he became exhausted.
He said he fell asleep for roughly 10 to 15 minutes, then woke up and realized his suitcase was gone.
“I had my luggage right here,” he told the officer, pointing to the area where he had been sleeping. “I woke up and it was gone.”
At first, he wondered whether airport staff or security officers had removed the suitcase because it was unattended. He had already called the non-emergency line, but no one had reported finding abandoned luggage in the area.
The suitcase was described as a black hard-shell roller bag with horizontal lines. Inside were clothing items, new Nike Jordans, and other personal belongings that the traveler estimated were worth several hundred dollars.
The traveler also explained that the bag contained most of what he needed for the next two weeks.
That made the theft more than an inconvenience. For someone arriving from abroad, losing a suitcase can mean losing clothing, travel essentials, identification-related documents, personal items, and the ability to continue a trip without immediately spending money to replace everything.
Cameras Show a Man Taking the Suitcase
The officer contacted airport camera personnel and asked whether they could see the area where the traveler had been sleeping.
The surveillance team quickly found footage showing a man approaching the luggage, taking it, and walking away through the terminal.
Police Release’s footage indicates that airport staff described the suspect as a Black male wearing a dark shirt with a colorful circular design on the front. The officer compared it to a Pepsi-style logo.
The officer began moving through the terminal while another officer stayed with the traveler.
“He did come up, took it, and went down this way,” the officer said after speaking with camera operators.
At that stage, the officers were working with two useful pieces of information: the surveillance footage showed the direction the suspect had gone, and the traveler had a hidden AirTag inside the suitcase.
The traveler said the AirTag was still showing the bag somewhere around Terminal B.
That helped officers determine that the suitcase had not yet left the airport area.
Apple AirTag Gives Officers a Moving Location
The AirTag did not give officers a perfect live map of the suspect’s movements, but it provided enough information to narrow the search.
The traveler checked the tracker while officers searched stairwells, upper-level areas, lower-level corridors, and nearby airport transportation zones.
At one point, the traveler said the location had updated only minutes earlier.
“That’s where they’re at right now,” he told officers while looking at the tracking information.
The officer told him not to get his hopes up too quickly, but said there was a possibility they had found the person who took the luggage.
The traveler’s response made clear how important the bag was to him.
“I got to make a flight,” he said, explaining that he needed to check in later that day.
The AirTag appears to have worked as a valuable secondary tool rather than the only source of evidence. Officers had camera footage, a physical description, the suitcase description, and the tracker location all pointing in the same direction.
That combination was important. Tracking technology can show where an item may be, but police still need to confirm what they are seeing and identify the person connected to it.
In this case, the tracker gave officers a time-sensitive lead while the suitcase was still close enough to be recovered.
Officers Spot a Suspect and a Foot Chase Begins
The search eventually led officers toward the TexRail area of the airport.
When officers approached the suspected thief, he ran.
“Stop running. Freeze,” an officer shouted. “Police. Stop right now.”
The footage shows officers chasing the man up steps before ordering him to the ground. He was told to get on his knees and keep his hands visible.
The suspect initially resisted getting into a compliant position, prompting officers to warn that he could be tased if he continued moving.
Eventually, he was taken into custody.
One officer told him that he had “picked the wrong guy to run from,” a reference to the airport’s surveillance system and the quick response from multiple officers.
The chase added an additional allegation beyond the missing luggage. According to Police Release, the man was charged not only with theft but also evading arrest or detention.
Running from officers may seem like an impulsive decision, but in a location covered by security cameras, it often creates more evidence and more serious legal exposure than simply remaining at the scene.
Suspect Gives Conflicting Explanation
After being detained, the suspect identified himself as Javon.
When officers asked about the suitcase, he first denied knowing who it belonged to.
“Whose bag is this?” an officer asked.
“I don’t know,” Javon replied.
He then said he had found the bag in the airport.
Officers pressed him for more details and asked where exactly he had found it. Javon said it had been sitting by itself, but officers pointed out that surveillance cameras were everywhere and suggested they had video of him taking it from near the traveler.
“Why are you lying to me?” one officer asked.
Javon continued denying that the suitcase had been next to anyone when he found it.
The bodycam footage shows officers carefully removing a backpack from him and checking whether he had any weapons or dangerous items before transporting him to the airport holding facility.
During the search, officers also asked about a possible outstanding warrant connected to Fort Worth marshals. Javon said he did not know why they wanted him.
The footage does not provide a final outcome for any separate warrant issue, so the case shown in the video remains centered on the reported luggage theft and the alleged attempt to flee.
Suitcase Is Recovered With Most Belongings Inside
Meanwhile, the traveler was told that officers had recovered his luggage.
“You guys, I don’t know what magic you did there,” he said after learning the suitcase had been found.
An officer explained that airport cameras were able to track the suspect through the terminal.
When the suitcase was returned, the traveler inspected it and found his Nike Jordans, clothing, and other belongings still inside. The bag had been opened and its contents were jumbled, but it appeared that most of the property remained.
The AirTag was also found inside the suitcase, near the lining and zipper area where the traveler said he had placed it.
The traveler repeatedly thanked the officers and said he did not know how to express his appreciation.
“I’m really appreciative,” he said.
The officers told him that helping recover stolen property was part of their job, but the relief in the traveler’s voice was obvious. He had arrived from an international trip, lost nearly all of his belongings, and expected he might have to board another flight without them.
Instead, the bag was back in his possession before the day was over.
A Small Tracker Makes a Big Difference
The case is a reminder that airport theft does not always involve elaborate schemes. Sometimes a thief simply notices an unattended bag and takes advantage of a moment when a tired traveler has fallen asleep.
But it also shows how quickly a stolen item can become traceable when multiple systems work together.
The AirTag gave the traveler a way to show officers that the bag remained in the area. Airport surveillance cameras helped identify the person who took it and showed the direction he traveled. Officers then moved quickly enough to find the suspect before the bag disappeared from the terminal.
Technology alone did not solve the case. The traveler still had to report the theft promptly, give officers a useful description, and cooperate as they investigated.
Still, the AirTag provided a practical layer of protection that may have made the difference between a recoverable theft and a suitcase that vanished beyond the airport.

Police Release said the man was charged with theft and evading arrest or detention. As with all criminal allegations, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
