A Texas father shot and killed a man who police say was trying to carjack his family’s vehicle while several relatives, including a baby, were still inside, according to a FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth report from David Sentendrey.
Sentendrey reported that the confrontation happened Sunday afternoon in Garland, near Highway 66 and Dairy Road, after police say the suspect had already crashed into two vehicles and tried to force his way into several others.
By the time he reached the family’s vehicle, most of the family of eight was still inside, unaware of what had just happened nearby and what was about to unfold around them.
The father struggled with the suspect for nearly a minute before firing the shot that killed him, according to Sentendrey’s report.
A Crash, Then A Series Of Attempted Carjackings
Sentendrey reported that Garland police first responded after the suspect crashed into two other vehicles in the area.
Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said officers were still responding to the scene when they received additional information that the driver had gotten out and immediately began trying to get into other vehicles in the parking lot.
“While we were responding to the scene, we received more information that the driver of that car had exited and immediately began physically trying to get into other vehicles,” Barineau said.
That detail suggests the situation was already chaotic before the family became involved. Police say this was not a single misunderstanding or a minor disturbance, but a fast-moving series of forced attempts to take vehicles.
Tatiana Starks, who manages Garland Smoke and Vape in the nearby shopping center, told Sentendrey she heard a loud crash before seeing the suspect move through the area.
“You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind,” Starks said.
She said she saw the man trying to get into several different cars at a gas station and began recording cellphone video.
“He, like, tried to get in several different cars,” Starks said.
Witness Says Suspect Walked Toward Her “Very Intentionally”
Starks told Sentendrey she stopped recording when the man began walking across the street toward her.
When asked whether he made direct eye contact, she said yes.
“He was walking very intentionally,” Starks said.
That moment helps explain the fear people nearby may have felt, even before the final confrontation. A person moving from car to car, acting erratically, and closing in on witnesses can make it very hard for anyone to know what will happen next.
Starks said the man then reached the family’s car.
“He ended up going into their car,” she said.
According to Sentendrey, the family of eight did not appear to know what was happening before the suspect entered the vehicle. That may be one of the most frightening parts of the story: the danger reached them before they had much time to understand it.
Father Struggles With Suspect As Family Remains Inside

The video shows the father struggling with the suspect as the suspect gets into the driver’s seat and tries to drive away. Sentendrey reported that after nearly a minute of struggle, the father, standing outside the vehicle near the passenger side door, shot the suspect.
The suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
This is the kind of case where seconds matter. A carjacking is already dangerous, but a carjacking with children and other family members inside becomes something even more urgent because the vehicle itself can become a moving hostage situation.
The father had no way to know where the suspect might take the vehicle, whether he was armed, or whether the family members inside would be hurt if the car left the parking lot.
Police Say Shooting Appears To Be Self-Defense
Sentendrey reported that Garland police do not expect to file charges against the father.
“It seemed to be self-defense,” Barineau said. “It kind of all really happened, uh, really fast.”
Police said no weapon was recovered from the suspect, aside from the gun used by the father. But Sentendrey noted that officers were adamant that the suspect was using force as he tried to carjack the vehicle.
Police also said that at the moment of the struggle, the father did not know whether the suspect was armed.
That distinction matters. In a violent encounter, especially one involving a forced attempt to steal a vehicle with family members inside, the person defending the car and passengers is not operating with the clarity of hindsight. He is reacting to a threat as it unfolds.
The fact that no weapon was found on the suspect afterward may become part of the investigation, but police appear to believe the force used in the carjacking attempt created a reasonable self-defense situation.
Witness Grateful Family Was Not Hurt
Starks told Sentendrey she was relieved the family survived without injuries.
“I’m just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family,” she said.
She also said it was a blessing that the children and the rest of the family walked away unharmed.
“It’s just a blessing that the kids and the family walked away with no injuries,” Starks said.
That relief is easy to understand. The surveillance video reportedly captured a violent and unpredictable encounter, but the family members inside the vehicle were not physically hurt.
In many carjacking cases, the outcome can be much worse. If a suspect manages to drive away with passengers inside, the danger can spread across roads, intersections, and neighborhoods, while the family trapped inside has little control over what happens next.

Suspect Still Not Identified
Sentendrey reported that Garland police were still working to identify the suspect who was shot and killed.
At the time of the report, police said they did not yet know his background, whether he had warrants, or whether there was something specific he was trying to flee after the initial crash.
That remains an important unanswered part of the case. Investigators will likely examine who he was, what he was doing before the crash, whether drugs or mental health issues may have played a role, and why he allegedly tried to enter multiple vehicles by force.
Starks said the man appeared not to be in his right state of mind, but police had not announced a final explanation for his behavior.
Until the suspect is identified and the investigation is complete, the public only has the sequence described by police: a crash, several attempted vehicle break-ins or carjackings, then a struggle with a father whose family was inside the vehicle.
