A Utah family checking into a vacation rental near San Diego got an unexpected reminder of a trip they had taken more than a decade earlier when they realized that a framed photograph hanging inside the Airbnb actually showed members of their own family.
CBS19’s Shannon Handy said Aubrey Birrell and her sister, Livy, were in Southern California with relatives to celebrate their grandfather’s 80th birthday when the strange discovery happened shortly after they arrived at the rental in Oceanside.
What initially looked like an ordinary beach photograph became much more unsettling once Birrell’s father glanced at it and joked that one of the people in the picture looked like him.
A Joke Quickly Turned Into Recognition
“My dad had walked up to help unpack some things and jokingly looked at the picture and said, ‘Hey, that looks like me,’” Birrell told Handy.
Once the family took a closer look, the joke stopped being a joke.
Birrell said they recognized her father, her sister and her brother Brady in the photograph, all standing on a beach in swimsuits during an older family trip.
She said there was little doubt about their identities because several small details matched what they remembered, including her father’s hair and posture and the way her younger sister used to wear her hair in a ponytail.
The family also recognized specific clothing, including a swimsuit they remembered well enough to remove most of the uncertainty.
For a few moments, the discovery was more creepy than funny.
Birrell told Handy the family felt unsettled by the coincidence, especially because they had traveled hundreds of miles from Utah and had no reason to expect that an old image of themselves would be decorating the rental they had just booked.
The Photo Came From A Trip 12 Years Earlier
After comparing memories, the family figured out that the photograph dated back roughly 12 years to another visit to the San Diego area for a soccer tournament.
They had stayed in both Mission Beach and Imperial Beach during that earlier trip, although Birrell said they still do not know exactly where the image was taken.
That uncertainty makes the coincidence even more unusual.
The family was not returning to the same known property or deliberately revisiting a place connected to the old photo; instead, they simply happened to book an Airbnb where an image taken during their earlier vacation had been selected as wall art.
Handy reported that the family eventually contacted the Airbnb host to find out how the picture got there.
According to Birrell, the host explained that the decorator was also a San Diego photographer who takes aerial beach photographs and uses them to decorate rental properties.
The host said the connection was simply a “crazy coincidence.”
There is no suggestion that anyone involved in decorating the home knew the family personally or selected the image because of them.
The Initial Unease Turned Into A Family Joke
Once the family understood there was a straightforward explanation, the strange discovery became part of the vacation rather than something that ruined it.
Birrell said they spent the rest of the trip joking about the photograph and showing it to friends.
“I called all my friends,” she said. “I was like, ‘Look how weird this is!’”
That reaction is easy to understand.
A random photograph on a rental wall is normally something guests barely notice, but seeing your own family frozen inside the frame from a vacation taken more than a decade earlier would make almost anyone stop and question how it got there.
The coincidence also highlights just how many anonymous vacation photographs end up circulating far beyond the people pictured in them.

Birrell eventually posted a video about the discovery on TikTok, where Handy said it drew millions of views and reactions from people around the world.
Some commenters told her they considered the photograph a sign of good luck, with a few even suggesting she should buy a lottery ticket.
Others shared stories of unexpectedly seeing themselves in tourism brochures, store displays and other photographs they had never knowingly posed for.
Birrell said those replies made the experience seem less unique than it first appeared, although finding a 12-year-old family vacation photo inside the exact rental where you are staying still ranks as an unusually specific coincidence.
The viral response also shifted the story from a private family oddity into something thousands of strangers could relate to in their own way.
There is something naturally compelling about accidentally crossing paths with an earlier version of yourself, especially when that encounter happens in a place you did not expect.
The Airbnb Owner Offered Them The Photograph
Despite the strange beginning, Birrell said the family enjoyed the trip and did not allow the discovery to become a negative experience.
The story may even end with them bringing the photograph home.
When Handy asked whether the Airbnb owner had requested an autograph, Birrell laughed and said no, but added that the owner had offered to send the framed image to the family if they wanted it.
She said they were trying to work out the details.
That would be a fitting ending to a very unusual vacation story, turning a photograph that initially made the family uncomfortable into a keepsake linking two trips taken 12 years apart.
The image had apparently spent years existing as ordinary beach decor to countless strangers, while the people pictured in it had no idea where it had ended up.
