The A-10 Warthog isn’t sleek, fast, or graceful. It looks like it was built in someone’s garage by a team of angry mechanics. But its ugliness is deceiving – because underneath that blunt exterior lies one of the deadliest and most respected aircraft ever flown in combat. Designed for one purpose and one purpose only, close air support, it has earned a legendary reputation among soldiers and enemies alike.

Born From a Gap in Firepower

After World War II, the U.S. military found itself with two kinds of planes: bombers and fighters. Neither was ideal for close support. A special scoop redirects gun exhaust to avoid choking the engines. Spent shells are pulled back into the drum instead of being ejected, preventing damage from hot brass flying out mid-air.

While the gun is its signature weapon, the A-10 is no one-trick pony. It has 11 hardpoints and can carry up to 16,000 pounds of ordinance. That includes AGM-65 Maverick missiles, GPS-guided bombs, rockets, and even cluster munitions. It can destroy tanks, bust bunkers, knock out radar installations, and suppress enemy forces with terrifying efficiency.
