Feds Put Sanctuary Cities On Notice

Federal officials are escalating their fight against sanctuary cities, putting local governments on notice for refusing to cooperate with immigration enforcement. In a fiery segment on Fox News, host Harris Faulkner spoke with former ICE director Tom Homan, who made it clear: sanctuary jurisdictions that protect criminal illegal aliens are facing lawsuits, enforcement sweeps, and public scrutiny.

“We’re putting them on notice,” Homan said. “Either you help us enforce the law or you’re part of the problem.” He emphasized that local law enforcement doesn’t need to act as immigration officers, but they do need to honor ICE detainers, especially for suspects in custody who pose a public safety threat.

Homan stressed that working with ICE benefits everyone – the community, the agents, and even the detainee. Arresting a suspect inside a jail is far safer than trying to track them down on the street, he argued.

“If we don’t get them in jail, we have to send teams out into neighborhoods. That’s more dangerous for everyone,” Homan warned. He also blamed sanctuary policies for preventable crimes, saying multiple victims,  including young girls, have been murdered by individuals who should have already been deported.

Homan and Faulkner also discussed the launch of a new DHS detention center in Indiana, dubbed the Speedway Slammer. It will house 1,000 beds specifically for criminal illegal aliens awaiting deportation. It follows the earlier rollout of Alligator Alcatraz, a Florida facility that currently holds 2,000 detainees and is expected to expand to 4,000.

According to Homan, these facilities allow for more efficient removals. “We want a runway right there. Arrest, detain, deport — all in one place,” he said. The ultimate goal, he added, is to reach 100,000 detention beds nationwide – enough to dramatically increase daily deportations.

Tricia McLaughlin: Sanctuary Politicians Have “Blood on Their Hands”

In an interview with Stuart Varney on Fox Business, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin offered equally strong words. “These sanctuary city politicians have blood on their hands,” she said, referencing the recent murder of an 11-year-old girl and her mother in New Jersey by an illegal alien with two prior DUIs.

Instead of being handed over to ICE, the suspect was released by local authorities and later committed a third DUI – the one that took two lives. “That girl and her mother would be alive today if ICE had been allowed to do its job,” McLaughlin said.

According to McLaughlin, the Speedway Slammer is just the beginning. DHS is working with state and local leaders across the country to build more centers, strategically placing them to expedite deportations. “These are cost-effective facilities,” she said, adding that having them near airstrips makes it easier to deport high-priority individuals quickly.

She confirmed that detention bed space is “the linchpin” to ramping up arrests and removals, especially under Trump’s goal of 3,000 deportations per day.

McLaughlin also highlighted new funding passed in what she called the “big, beautiful bill” signed by President Trump. It includes support for 10,000 new ICE officers and the removal of previous age restrictions on who can apply.

“Whether you’re 40, 50, or even 60, you can join ICE,” she told Varney. As long as applicants pass the physical and medical screening, age is no longer a barrier. It’s part of a broader push to strengthen ICE’s reach and manpower, especially in cities resisting cooperation.

But the crackdown comes with risk. McLaughlin noted that assaults on ICE agents have surged 830% in recent years. “That’s what happens when political leaders compare our officers to terrorists,” she said, pointing fingers at Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who she claimed have made inflammatory remarks.

A recent incident in Washington State saw a rock thrown through an ICE office window. It’s part of a larger trend of violence, with 258 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty between 2021 and 2024, according to McLaughlin.

In a related clip aired by Varney, President Trump suggested that if crime in Washington, D.C. continues to spiral, the federal government may intervene directly. “We’re going to have to federalize and run it the way it’s supposed to be run,” Trump said, referring to the violent attacks on DOJ employees and general lawlessness.

McLaughlin responded cautiously, saying she would defer to the DOJ on how that would technically work, but made it clear that “federal law enforcement will step in” if local leaders fail to control their streets.

Despite the controversy, DHS officials say their efforts are already paying off. Tom Homan told Harris Faulkner that since Trump took office, ICE has arrested over 300,000 illegal aliens, with 70% of them being criminals. “We’re taking violent people off the street. That makes America safer,” he stated.

Homan cited internal data showing that most recent ICE arrests involve individuals who pose either a public safety or national security threat. Many have prior convictions, final orders of removal, and have already gone through the full legal process – paid for by taxpayers.

Sanctuary Cities Face a Crossroads

From a policy standpoint, the administration is making a clear statement: if cities won’t cooperate, the federal government will go around them. And they’re backing up that stance with lawsuits, new detention centers, and the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.

What’s fascinating, and politically explosive, is the way this issue blends immigration, public safety, and state-federal power. Critics say sanctuary cities protect vulnerable populations from overreach. Supporters of enforcement say those same policies protect criminals and endanger innocent lives.

More Beds, More Agents, More Pressure

As the Trump administration celebrates what they call a 90% drop in border encounters since February, they’re also shifting their focus to the interior of the country. That means more raids, faster removals, and tighter coordination between federal and local law enforcement – if the locals are willing to play ball.

The message from DHS is blunt: sanctuary policies aren’t just political – they’re dangerous. And with detention centers like Speedway Slammer going live, the days of ignoring ICE detainers may be coming to an end.
