In a new video from the economy and trading YouTube channel Market Gains, viewers are confronted with a grim reality: layoffs have become an everyday headline, and for Gen Z, even doing everything “right” no longer guarantees a stable career. Clips throughout the video show young workers speaking candidly about being let go, some only days after starting a job. The video opens with a string of personal stories – people who thought they were on track, only to find themselves unemployed overnight.
The Broken Promise of Education

Market Gains focuses heavily on the voices of recent college graduates. These are people who followed the traditional advice: go to college, work hard, network, and be willing to start at the bottom. Yet the outcome has been the same for many of them – no job, months of unpaid bills, and a growing sense of failure. One young woman in the video explains she applied to hundreds of companies after graduation, got a few interviews, and still came up empty-handed. “Nobody ever talks about how hard it is to find a job post-undergrad,” she says.
Hundreds of Applications, Zero Results

The video highlights just how competitive even low-paying roles have become. Market Gains shares the story of a man who sent out 316 applications and received only five interviews, with no offers in the end. The channel points out that in 2017 or 2018, before the pandemic, a job hunter might apply to 50 positions and expect 10 to 12 interviews. Now, hundreds of applications result in almost nothing.
When Even McDonald’s Says No

For viewers who think “just take any job,” the video has a sobering response. Many of these young workers have already tried. As shown in the Market Gains video, even retail chains and fast-food restaurants are rejecting candidates. Several TikTok clips explain that jobs once considered easy to get, like working at Walmart or Amazon warehouses, now require prior experience. The host emphasizes how absurd the barrier has become for positions that were once entry-level.
Federal Hiring Freeze Makes It Worse

The Market Gains report warns that it isn’t just private companies tightening the belt. The federal government has frozen hiring, and recently extended that freeze for another three months. That decision has flooded the private job market with even more applicants, making an already brutal competition for positions even tougher. When the government stops hiring, it pulls thousands of potential opportunities off the table at once, leaving more jobseekers scrambling.
Tech Graduates Left Behind

Another striking point in the video comes from a Berkeley professor quoted by Market Gains, who says that even top computer science graduates with 4.0 GPAs can’t find work. The tech sector, once a safe haven for ambitious young people, has been gutted by layoffs and hiring freezes. Since January, tech companies have cut more than 37,000 jobs, with some firms redirecting salaries to fund AI tools instead of human workers.
Automation Replaces People

The host of Market Gains connects the dots between these layoffs and the rise of automation. In industries like insurance, finance, and customer service, companies are now hiring AI “implementation partners” to replace workers. Tasks like database management, billing, claims processing, and other repetitive office work are being automated, and Market Gains stresses that these roles are disappearing faster than many graduates can adapt.
Personal Toll: A Year of Rejection

The video also includes deeply personal stories of those hit hardest by these changes. One graduate describes applying to jobs all summer, then all fall, and ending up babysitting part-time because it was the only work she could find. Another speaks about the emotional weight of rejection after rejection: “I did everything right, and still no offers,” she says. These aren’t isolated cases. Market Gains uses these clips to illustrate how widespread the crisis is among Gen Z.
Mental Health and Moving Back Home

Market Gains also highlights a trend that many families are quietly living through: a wave of college graduates moving back home. For some, this has meant giving up big city ambitions just to survive. The video features one young woman who admits to feeling ashamed of returning to her childhood bedroom after earning a degree. She tries to reassure viewers by saying, “You’re not a failure because you don’t have a job yet,” but the discouragement is obvious.
Burnout Before Careers Even Begin

In the final third of the video, the channel focuses on how burnout has hit students even before their careers start. Several seniors speak about how unmotivated they feel about graduating because they see no job waiting for them. The promise that a degree equals security has eroded so much that graduation itself feels empty for many. Market Gains calls this the “death of the traditional reward cycle,” where the payoff for years of schooling no longer exists.
Small Victories Amid the Chaos

Despite the bleak picture, the video includes a few glimpses of resilience. One clip shows a woman who walked into a security company, told them she wouldn’t leave without a job, and walked out hired. Another describes finally getting two jobs after a year of rejection. These moments, while rare, are framed as proof that persistence can still pay off, even in a market this unforgiving.
A Generation on Pause

Watching the Market Gains video, it’s hard not to sympathize with these young people. They did what society told them to do – work hard, get degrees, stay patient – only to graduate into one of the toughest labor markets in recent memory. Automation is erasing jobs before they even start, companies are asking for experience just to stock shelves, and the very institutions that promised them opportunity are locked behind hiring freezes.
This isn’t just a recession. It’s a generational reset. And for many in Gen Z, life feels like it’s stuck on pause. If there’s a lesson here, it’s that the traditional roadmap to success may need to be rewritten. But for those currently stuck in the middle of it, that advice doesn’t pay the bills.
