Ohio’s first Buc-ee’s has been open for a week, but the excitement around the new Huber Heights travel center is still running strong, with local officials saying the opening brought huge crowds, packed hotels, and more than $1 million in sales on the first day alone.

WDTN-TV reporter Kiersten Riedford reported that the new store has quickly become one of the biggest attractions in the Miami Valley, drawing visitors from near and far after opening its doors in Huber Heights. The crowds were not limited to opening day either, as city leaders told Riedford that people are still packing the store a week later.

Huber Heights Ward 6 Councilmember Brian Looney said he has already visited several times with his children, and each trip has shown him just how much attention the new store is getting.

“It’s busy all the time,” Looney told Riedford. “I’ve been there four times with my kids, and it’s as crazy as it sounds.”

A Record-Setting Opening In Huber Heights

Riedford reported that the Buc-ee’s opening brought people into Huber Heights from across the area and beyond, including visitors from as far away as Japan, along with locals who live only a few minutes from the store.

Huber Heights Mayor Jeff Gore said Buc-ee’s told city officials that the Ohio location had the biggest grand opening of any store the company has opened anywhere in the country.

“We’ve heard reports from Buc-ee’s that this location was their single biggest grand opening they’ve had at any store location anywhere in the country,” Gore said.

The sales numbers were just as striking. Gore said the store brought in more than $1 million in sales on opening day.

“They did over a million dollars in sales just on Monday alone,” Gore told Riedford.

For a city, that kind of first-day attention is more than a fun headline. A travel center that can pull visitors from outside the region can change traffic patterns, hotel demand, nearby restaurant sales, and the way businesses look at future development.

It is still early, as Gore noted elsewhere, to measure the full economic impact, but a seven-figure opening day makes it clear that the new Buc-ee’s did not enter Ohio quietly.

Hotels Filled Before The Doors Opened

The demand was not limited to the store’s parking lot.

Riedford reported that local hotels were fully booked the weekend before the opening, and Gore said the pattern continued after opening day as people who could not make it on Monday came later in the week and the following weekend.

“That’s carried over to the week,” Gore said, explaining that the most recent weekend saw a similar effect because many people from outside the area were unable to attend the Monday opening.

That is one of the more unusual parts of the Buc-ee’s story. Most gas stations do not fill hotels. Most convenience stores do not become family road trip destinations before they even open.

But Buc-ee’s has built a brand that is closer to roadside entertainment than a simple fuel stop. People go for the food, the bathrooms, the merchandise, the size, and, of course, the beaver mascot. It is part travel center and part tourist stop, which explains why the opening felt more like a regional event than a regular store launch.

A Family Outing, Not Just A Gas Stop

Looney told Riedford that the Huber Heights location is bringing people from all over, not just local drivers looking for fuel.

“It’s not just a community effort,” Looney said. “It brings in people from all over the place. And I see a lot of families, it becomes somewhat like a field trip or a family outing.”

That description fits the way Buc-ee’s has grown its reputation. The company is known for large stores, fresh food, branded merchandise, a huge number of fuel pumps, and clean bathrooms, which sounds practical on paper but has turned into something more memorable for travelers.

The Huber Heights store is a major facility, located off Interstate 70 near the State Route 235 intersection. The store is about 74,000 square feet, includes 108 fuel pumps, offers electric vehicle charging, and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

That size alone helps explain the crowds. A store like this is not built only for the people who live nearby. It is built to catch highway traffic, road-trippers, families, truckers, commuters, and curious visitors who want to see what the hype is about.

City Leaders Expect The Buzz To Continue

Riedford reported that the council members she spoke with do not expect the Buc-ee’s craze to fade quickly.

Looney said there is still a lot of excitement around the store, and he expects it to stay busy for a while.

“A lot of excitement, a lot of hype about it,” he said. “It’s very exciting. I look forward to it being busy for a while.”

Gore also said the opening is helping people outside the city notice Huber Heights in a new way.

“What’s happening is that people outside of the city and businesses are starting to realize, you know what, there is something pretty special happening in Huber Heights and they want to be a part of it,” Gore said.

That may be the larger story for city leaders. Buc-ee’s is not just a store to them; it is a signal that Huber Heights can attract a major destination business and use that attention to build more growth around it.

Riedford said the mayor wants the city to continue on a path toward becoming a place where people want to live, work, and play.

More Ohio Buc-ee’s Plans Could Be Ahead

The Huber Heights store may not be Ohio’s only Buc-ee’s for long.

Riedford’s report noted that plans have also been discussed for another potential location in Mansfield, where Mayor Jodie Perry posted that work has been underway to bring the travel center to the city.

According to that announcement, a petition for annexation was filed involving the city, county, and nearby townships for development of a travel center at the I-71 and Ohio 39 interchange.

If that project moves forward, it would show that Buc-ee’s sees Ohio as more than a one-store experiment. Given the size of the Huber Heights opening, it is easy to see why other communities would want to be next.

A Buc-ee’s can bring traffic, jobs, hotel stays, and attention, but it also brings crowds and the need for nearby roads and businesses to handle the surge. For Huber Heights, at least so far, local officials seem to believe the tradeoff is worth it.

A Travel Center Becomes A Local Event

The opening week in Huber Heights shows how unusual the Buc-ee’s brand has become.

A convenience store made more than $1 million on opening day, filled nearby hotels, drew visitors from far beyond the city, and had local leaders talking about long-term economic impact. That is not normal gas station behavior, and it says a lot about how carefully Buc-ee’s has turned itself into a destination.

For residents, the crowds may be a lot to handle. For city officials, the attention appears to be exactly what they hoped for.

As Riedford reported, the “Buc-ee’s buzz” is still not over a week after the opening, and if local leaders are right, Huber Heights may be seeing heavy traffic around its new beaver-branded attraction for quite some time.
